Negative Space
The Penang South Reclamation (PSR) Project involves creating islands from landfills off the coast of Southern Penang.
It has various negative implications such as the economic impact on the fishermen involved and the heavy environmental impact on the ocean.
Above is a selection of images for the Obscura Festival held in Penang. They serve as an emotional response to what I saw and heard from the various fishermen I befriended. I construct a dream-state for the fishermen who have yet to be affected by the reclamation project, to evoke a sense of uncertainty in their futures, and to show their loss of identity as fishermen. I also present a narrative grounded in reality, showcasing the stillness of the home of a family already affected by a previous reclamation project, and also the tension and chaos within a political dialogue session held between the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, and the various fishermen associations.
